The Original 1227™ User Guide - Part 2: Living Room Lighting

This is part 2 of a 5-part series of guides on using the iconic Original 1227™ range at home. Written by design writer Charlotte Abrahams. You can read part 1 here (Kitchen & Dining Room Lighting).

We give you the inside track to a perfectly-lit living room in the second of our series guide to lighting your home with pieces from the Anglepoise® Original 1227™ collection.

The living room is a place of relaxation, a room where we sit back to read, to socialise and to watch television. Ideally, our living space will be filled with natural light streaming in through generous, south-facing windows; however, for many of us, the reality is somewhat darker. But look on the bright side: dark rooms provide the perfect excuse to splash out on some absolutely fabulous lights.

Ambient lighting

As living rooms don’t really need general illumination, you can probably do without a central pendant here and focus instead on creating layers of light using multiple sources. (However, if you have a ceiling rose and feel that it would look odd without a pendant, go for a feature light that is more about form than function – try the Original 1227™ Giant Pendant in a large space, or an Original 1227™ Mini Ceramic Cluster which creates a warm glow.

Then enhance that cosy feeling with table lamps placed around the edges of the room where they will radiate light inwards (the Original 1227™ Mini or Original 1227™ Mini Ceramic Table Lamp are both good options) and complete the look with a freestanding uplight in one corner.

You can also use lights to mark out distinct zones within a larger living space. For example, an Original 1227™ Brass Wall Mounted Light slung low over a seating area will instantly turn that area into an intimate, cosy place in which to share a glass of wine with a friend.

This is an eclectic look, but you can avoid stylistic confusion by choosing lights which share a similar aesthetic. A room lit with various models from the Original 1227™ Collection would be visually coherent since all are imbued with classic Anglepoise® styling.

Task Lighting

Reading and watching television are probably the major ‘tasks’ we undertake in the living room. Reading requires excellent, focused light so go for a lamp with an adjustable shade such as the Original 1227™ Floor Lamp, the Original 1227™ Desk Lamp or, if space permits, the statement-making Original 1227™ Giant Floor Lamp. (Remember though, scale matters so if you choose the Giant option, make sure the chair it sits beside is generously proportioned too). Reading lights should always be placed behind or to the side of the chair.

Watching television, on the other hand, calls for soft, glare-free light. An uplighter or a floor lamp with an adjustable shade that can be pointed up towards the ceiling would work well behind or next to the television. The Original 1227™ Floor Lamp is a good option.

You may also want to illuminate a specific picture or work of art. An Original 1227™ Wall Mounted Light would work well positioned alongside an object, or at either end of a display shelf, while an Original 1227™ With Desk Clamp could be inserted within the display.
